HISTORIC RESTORATION

The Spotswood House, located in the hills of Mendocino County in Northern California, was built in 1885 on land that once covered hundreds of acres. When the present owners purchased it in 1994, it was a complete wreck, crying out for a new beginning. After the homeowners restored several barns on the property, including one that had been home to the famous racehorse, Seabiscuit, they turned their attention to the house. When they asked Emery & Associates to design the interiors in 2001, we reached out to architect Michael Garavaglia of Garavaglia Architecture to collaborate with the architectural restoration.
The cupola and widow’s walk were restored to the third story of the home. The outside porch was returned to the solarium as in the original design, and the ceilings were raised to their original 12-foot height. Modern plumbing, electrical, and HVAC were added. Emery & Associates specified all plumbing and electrical fixtures, as well as architectural trim, tile, countertop, and paint colors, in addition to providing all of the upholstery and curtain fabrics from historic sources. The homeowners’ antiques were used where possible, along with Emery & Associates furnishings and accessories, such as the Trumeau mirror over the parlor fireplace. Orchards and vineyards now cover the surrounding acreage, and Spotswood Farm stands out as a growing monument to agrarian life as it was in 1885.
