Modern Luxe

Our long-time clients, Susan and Bruce Winthrop, recently downsized from a large suburban home to a condo on the top floor of Atwater Place in the South Waterfront. They no longer wanted to deal with the upkeep of a house and large yard, and they wanted to be nearer the city center where many of their favorite activities are located. Losing 600 square feet of living space meant that they needed new furnishings for the living, dining, and TV room of the new condo. They called Emery & Associates to help with the space planning and furnishings selection.

Emery_Winthrop_00285What the Winthrops lost in size was more than made up for by the spectacular views of the Willamette River and city skyline,  which provide an ever-changing panorama through the floor-to-ceiling windows, and gives a feeling of expansiveness to the living space. For that reason we chose a neutral palette of beiges and taupes, punched up with color from their art and accessories.

The master bedroom shows a slightly different view of the Willamette River than the living room. Here, Bruce and Susan can enjoy an unobstructed view of the wildlife and boat traffic on the river.

Always enjoy reading about the way you work with your clients to meet their needs. Downsizing is an art in itself and you certainly worked to make this 1300 sq. ft. condo a thing of beauty with river views, modern architecture and the clients’ colorful artwork all as key elements of your design. Congratulations! Felt like we were back in New York City hi-rises. So fun to capture on “film.” Bravissima!

OMG, Kathia. This is stunning. I like it all and would be thrilled to live there. Plus I adore the river-facing apartments in this building. I love your orange accents and the creams and browns. It’s classic but contemporary. This is a total favorite of mine!

Wow and Wow! Kathia, I think this is the first very modern work of yours I have seen and it’s fabulous! The neutrals are calm and lead the eyes to the huge views. Delicate bedroom colors also compliment the window view. How did you manage to get the bedspread color to match the river? Brava!

Thank you all for the kind words. The views here are spectacular, and being in the condo is even more wonderful than seeing these photos. Since many people think I do only “traditional” design, I’m glad that we were able to have this project professionally photographed so that the world can know that I do whatever the client and the architecture demands, whether it be traditional, transitional, contemporary, or something that mixes a variety of styles.
